To help you navigate this process, we have compiled a 10-step guide that covers everything from setting clear goals to evaluating strategies and ensuring effective communication.
Step 1: Define Your Goals
Before you begin your search for a digital marketer, it is essential to have a clear understanding of your goals. Are you looking to increase website traffic, boost book sales, or enhance brand awareness? Clearly defining your objectives along with your target audience, say (US readers) will help you find a marketer who specializes in the areas that align with your goals. Also, do your homework by preparing a list of Books (may be in a Word document), along with their Links to all publishing platforms where the book is available, their 2D and 3D images, and Book trailers (if possible) to be promoted or the website to be promoted. You will need to send them to the Digital Marketer whom you engage for doing the promotion.
Step 2: Research Potential Candidates
Take the time to research potential digital marketers who have experience in promoting books or websites. I am sure once you place your first book-release posting in Facebook groups, you will be flooded with messages and friend requests from Digital Marketers across the globe. Go through them carefully and look for testimonials, case studies, and examples of their previous work to determine if they have achieved successful results for their clients. Look for their Facebook profile, Fiverr, or Upwork Profile where they have presented themselves for their services.
Step 3: Evaluate Their Expertise
When evaluating potential candidates, consider their expertise in various digital marketing strategies such as search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, content marketing, and email marketing. Look for someone who has a well-rounded skill set and can offer a comprehensive approach to promoting your book or website. Important Point: Don't be carried away by their captivating description of professional services that they can provide, as 90% of them craft it using Artificial Intelligence, for it is not the description, but the result that does matter.
Step 4: Assess Their Communication Skills
Effective communication is vital when working with a digital marketer. Look for someone who listens to your needs, asks relevant questions, and provides clear and concise explanations of their strategies and recommendations. Don't consider their package price list for now unless you have confidence in them. They may be tempting you with some discounts for a limited time, does not matter.
Step 5: Review Their Portfolio
Ask potential candidates to provide a portfolio of their previous work. Look for examples that demonstrate their ability to create engaging content, drive website traffic, and generate leads or sales. Always ask for a reference list of their recently served clients where they have done similar work and check for their authenticity. Check when their profile on Facebook, Fiverr, or Upwork was created, meaning the profile should not have been created in the recent past, say one month back or so. See their postings on Facebook profiles and read others' comments. This way you can find out the clear picture and the capacity of the Digital Marketer.
Step 6: Consider Their Industry Knowledge
It is important to find a digital marketer who understands your industry and target audience. They should be familiar with the latest trends and best practices in your niche, allowing them to create effective marketing strategies that resonate with your audience. If you are promoting your book, then they should be from the book industry within your Niche. For example, a Digital Marketer of a Product will not be effective for the promotion of your Books as the strategy is different for Product Marketing, compared two Book Marketing.
Step 7: Request a Proposal
Ask the shortlisted candidates to provide a detailed proposal outlining their strategies, timelines, and expected outcomes. This will give you a better understanding of their approach and help you compare different options. Always ask for the time like (TOT) Turn around time from the time you place your order. The result should not be more than 3 weeks and also ask them about the effectiveness of the promotion like for how many days the result will work. Don't get carried away by qualitative descriptions and strategies that they are promising, ask for quantitative commitments. Ask for How many Committed Sales they can make in a Week or in a Month, for the cost they are offering, and always ask for "what would be the money back guarantee if they fail to achieve the committed sales. This is very important and I am telling you from my experience. I have not seen a single Digital Marketer who commits with a money-back guarantee, but this is required as Authors have No control over DMs after placing the order.
Step 8: Check References
Reach out to the digital marketer's previous clients and ask for references. Inquire about their experience working with the marketer, the results they achieved, and their overall satisfaction with the services provided. Chat with their recently completed clients and ask about their experience. If they do not provide a reference don't engage that DM, even if they are cheaper. Also, don't be carried away by high-charging DM's whose intention is to create a quality service on the minds of Authors, You can find a capable DM with nominal cost also.
Step 9: Consider Budget and ROI
While cost is a crucial factor to consider, it should not be the sole determining factor. Look for a digital marketer who offers a balance between affordability and the potential return on investment (ROI) they can deliver. For God's sake do not pay 100% advance money and always settle with minimum advance payment with assurance to submit the progress of their promotion then and there. Ask them to tag in all their promotions and be specific and clear on the inclusions and exclusions like (video trailers) included in the promotion or not.
Step 10: Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts when making a decision. Choose a digital marketer who not only possesses the necessary skills and expertise but is also someone you feel comfortable working with and trust to promote your book or website effectively.
